Liner Notes

As Van Heumen and Van Veenendaal draw us into their sonic domain, they immediately assert their sophisticated and well-developed improvising relationship. We are met with what appears, at points, to be a seamless integration of the acoustic and the electronic, resulting in a joyous ambiguity of a musical world that seems to present itself as a single unified entity. Glitchy repeated notes fool us into believing that they have been produced on the piano, until we are unsure as to whether we have just heard the piano interject, or not. Carefully selected preparations along with live sampling techniques twist, transpose and transform the commonplace instrument, and lead us through a constantly evolving exploration of various auditory realms.

But despite the tight alliance that is quickly formed within this album, the clear, distinct voice of each performer comes through in the deliciously crisp and gesturally-sensitive digital world of Van Heumen, and the deliberate tensions, releases and imagery created by Van Veenendaal. But above of all, we do not need to consider the technique and mastery displayed here in order to fully absorb this piece of work. The music itself will transport the listener through states both mechanical yet expressive; percussive and rhythmical, yet ambient and delicate; and human, yet cetacean.

Lauren Sarah Hayes, composer, performer, improviser

Oene van Geel, violist and composer, winner of the prestigious Boy Edgar Price (2013)

Reviews

Biographies

Albert van Veenendaal refers to himself as 'pictorial musician' because of the epical and cinematic character of his music. Improvisation and composition go hand in hand and merge seamlessly. With an open approach and interaction with his fellow musicians he creates musical constructions that are unconventional and intuitive, displaying his unique style that will instantly be recognized. "It is important to me to make music without having appointed ideas in advance about how the music is supposed to sound. What I call 'pictorial music' is about passion, risk and skill, not to forget the musician's personality. The intensity of a good concert is like balancing on the edge of a razor blade. I try therefore to approach every concert like a painter will approach his empty canvas. To start from scratch every time and to give myself up into the attempt remains endlessly captivating to me."

Robert van Heumen is an electronic musician-composer using an extended laptop instrument to perform highly immersive and hyper-dynamic electro-acoustic music. As a musician, live sampling is his main tool. With a joystick and other tactile controllers, live sampled source sounds are gesturally manipulated and reworked within open ended narratives. Van Heumen is constantly searching for new strategies for live sampling and for the perfect balance between free improvisation and structured music. The laptop is used in an instrumental, tactile way, connecting action to sound like any acoustic instrument, and is used live as well as in the studio to generate sonic material for fixed-media works.
